Automatic Backup Software?

I have a Maxtor One Touch III external hard drive and the Maxtor software is fantastic. I just leave the HDD plugged in and everyday it automatically makes a backup of my files where I can access and view at any time I want.
However, the drive is small, and I upgraded. The new hard drive is just out of a laptop and placed in an enclosure, and I want a software that will do something just like Maxtor’s. I have tried Roxio and Ocstar or something like that and they backup, but to some unreadable files unless I use the program to restore the files.
Is there any programs, preferably free, that I can use to make scheduled automatic backups of readable files to an external hard drive?
I use syncback. It is a pretty cool and free backing up software where it copies files as it is so you can access it any time without the software. It can also sync files as well.
