Priorities and time management?

April 20, 2010 by

I want to do the following:

1. Sleep on time, wake up on time
2. exercise regularly.
3. Be happy – (am not very happy)
4. Do some personal work regularly like make my own projects, learn somethings, do some sketching.
5. And do my office work

All I manage to is work and more work. It never gets done enough. Our bosses make project plans. They involve us but no matter what the work never goes as per plan. I think because we are in software creation and always working on something new we will always have surprises in our work. Net result everyone is continuously slipping in their schedule. I feel like a donkey all the time. Everyone stays late and slogs a lot.

Has anyone ever successfully solved this problem. How?
Software programming is all about solving problems. Anyone ever solve this one problem?

Hmmm. Probably doesn’t just affect software workers, but I know where you’re coming from!

1a. No caffeine after lunch, no late night TV, no alcohol during the week. Go to bed at the same time every day.
1b. An alarm clock is helpful. Preferably an annoyingly loud one that doesn’t shut up that you can put on the other side of your bedroom so you can’t just turn it off, roll over and go back to sleep.
    2. Walk/cycle to work (or at least the last mile or two)
    3. Find a hobby that interests you, that’s not too similar to your work – and do it in the evenings/at weekends
    4. Depends how you get to work. If you take a train or bus, you could fit in learning/sketching something on the way – or even during the lunch break (don’t skip lunch – and get out of the office if you can to break the monotony of sitting behind the same desk all day)
    5. You’ll probably be more productive if you get regular sleep, and don’t think about work all the time by doing something non-work-related whenever possible.

    1. Sleep on time, wake up on time

This is a function of both time management and being healthy. Make sure you eat well, go to bed at the predetermined time (even if you are not sleepy) and if you have trouble getting up, drink a lot of water before you sleep. That way you will wake up to empty your system. Don’t go back to sleep then.

    2. exercise regularly.

Make it a regiment. What is your motivation for being healthy. Think of all the reasons that you should be healthy. If pain motivates you, then think of all the things that happen as a result of you not exercising.
Put it n your calendar and stick to it, come rain or shine.

    3. Be happy – (am not very happy)

Mindset. Anyone can be happy. All you have to do is to say “CANCEL CANCEL” whenever any non-happy thoughts creep into your mind, and say to yourself – “I CHOOSE to be HAPPY. I deserve to be happy”

    4. Do some personal work regularly like make my own projects, learn somethings, do some sketching.

Block out time for these tasks. Yes you have to plan this into your schedule. And when the time comes, just do it.

    5. And do my office work

Same as #4. Also about motivation. What motivates you to finish the office work. What happens if it doesnt get done?
