I use Windows Calendar like crazy for school. I’ve never been good at keeping a schedule and have ADHD and crazy procrastination problems and take a ton of classes in college, so I started using it and it had worked miracles for my time management skills. Windows Calendar comes with Windows Vista and I think XP may have it. Mozilla (the makers of the Firefox web browser) also make Mozilla Sunbird which is comparable to to Windows Calendar. Both of these are free and allow daily or hourly planning and schedules and calendars and color coding.

Outlook, Outlook, Outlook (not Outlook Express). I use it for everything…email, appointments, to-do/task lists, journals, planning, etc. I even use it for sticky notes. After working with a lady who was crazy about them (stuck sticky note reminders all over the monitor and actually filed away those that weren’t needed anymore) I grew to hate them. They are handy but annoying. …so I use Outlook’s “Notes” function as a replacement. Works like a charm. The notes function can also be used to store login and passwords to favorite websites.
…and you can supplement Outlook with Microsoft OneNote which acts like a scrapbook/notebook for your computer.
Downside: None of these are free.

There are free alternatives out there.
OpenOffice.org might have one, not sure. http://www.openoffice.org
    Mozilla Sunbird. https://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird/
    Windows Calendar (Vista only)
Windows Calendar for Windows 7 http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/looking-for-windows-calendar

One of the really good ones is MS Outlook. This allows you to do tasks, notes, scheduling, and email.
