I use it for everything...email, appointments, to-do/task lists, journals, planning, etc. I even use it for sticky notes. After working with a lady who was crazy about them (stuck sticky note reminders all over the monitor and actually filed away those that weren't needed anymore) I grew to hate them. They are handy but annoying. ...so I use Outlook's "Notes" function as a replacement. Works like a charm. The notes function can also be used to store login and passwords to favorite websites. ...and you can supplement Outlook with Microsoft OneNote which acts like a scrapbook/notebook for your computer. Windows Calendar comes with Windows Vista and I think XP may have it. Mozilla (the makers of the Firefox web browser) also make Mozilla Sunbird which is comparable to to Windows Calendar.
