Word, Excel , possibly Microsoft Access which is not easily learned in one day before an interview

TomParis’ response is right on. Have a working knowledge of MicroSoft Office software cannot be learned by reading a book and will take some time. However, if there is already set up various letter templates, Excel spreadsheets, and Outlook schemes, then it’s only a matter of data entry which you can learn on-the-job.

    Good luck!

You will need to be at an EXPERT level of Word and Excel. *No less than intermediate if it is an “entry level” position.

Word is easy however Excel is difficult and will take a while to master. The formatting, formulas and charts/graphs will be your biggest stumbling block.

Possibly an intermediate level of Powerpoint and Access. It depends if they utilize either for presentations or collection of data. Be cautious of Access if you do not know it, one wrong click & safe and you can destroy the database. Then obviously Outlook, not a hard one to master. Quickbooks is very easy to learn (if your computer literate),

If you do not have a working knowledge of MS Office, they will probably figure that out long before you muck your way through Quickbooks. If your just learning Office, all previous versions of it are similar, the big changes came on 2007 with the introduction of XP.

By the way, coming from a H/R Director, I hesitated in answering your question because of your “PS – Chick Job” comment. Might want to do away with that sort of thinking. Fortunately there is NO more “Man’s World or Woman’s Place Mentality” in corporate America anymore. We busted through the “glass ceiling” over a decade ago and never looked back.

Good Luck on the job and college!

If you don’t already have “expert” level experience with Word and Excel you’re sunk. This will get discovered VERY quickly. Data collection & management = MSAccess. Access is complicated enough to where it would take more than a single day of playing around with it to become proficient enough to create usable databases. Once you learn it, its easy to use.
My advice: Don’t bother with a book. Get MSOffice (you can download 60day free trial from Microsoft’s website) and learn the programs by just playing around with them and using the help files. You’ll learn ALOT more that way than you will by reading about it. Microsoft also has tutorials on their website.
